Stars Above: ESO Discoveries is Interactive prototype that invites visitors to take control of a model of the VLT (Very Large Telescope) to explore the night sky of the Atacama Desert, learning more about our universe and the engineering achievements behind it.
The project is a collaboration between ESO (European Southern Observatory) and Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. It presents ESO's research and discoveries in an interactive format combining several tangible interaction mediums to understand the engineering of the telescopes and the processes behind various ESO discoveries.
Visitors are invited to join the gamified discovery process through a series of interactions with tabgible modules and gestures that create a feasible narrative of the challenges astronomers face when using the Very Large Telescope (VLT).
The projection in front of the exhibit invites visitors to collaboratively explore ESO’s processes by taking on the roles of natural phenomena that can obstruct discovery, such as atmospheric turbulence.
